India is an old civilization, but a young nation. Its tradition, while
rich in many ways, created a social structure marked by inequality
and limited access to education for the majority. In 1947, when India
became free of British rule, the then leaders brought in what has
been called the Idea of India?a belief that all people are equal and
can govern themselves through democracy. This lecture will discuss
the implications of this Idea on the old civilisation, explain the
basis for the current spurt in economic growth and lay out issues
that now need to be tackled. At the end, the potential for Brazil and
India to work together will be raised for discussion.
